We are thrilled to announce two new coaching additions to the coaching staff at SoCal Santa Barbara. Please give a warm welcome to Greg Novak and K.C. Collins! Both these coaches have been very successful locally in Santa Barbara not only with their high school teams, but with their club teams as well.
Greg Novak (VB Instructor)
- Former Girl’s Varisty Assistant with 2009 CIF winning team at Dos Pueblos High
- Current Girl’s Varsity Head Coach at the Cate School, with two first place league finishes and 2014 CIF champs
Originally from Camarillo, Greg was a die-hard surfer throughout high school and college. Greg was introduced to the beach volleyball game by Kathy Hanley and Kathy Gregory, then spent many years competing in the CBVA beach volleyball events where he earned his “AA” rating, and also played indoors for City League.
Greg has coached high school girls volleyball including over six years at Dos Pueblos High, and two years assisting boys varsity at Santa Barbara High. Greg completed his run at DPHS as the Girls Varsity Assistant coach, where his team won the CIF championship in 2009. In previous seasons, his JV teams won 5 tournaments in a row over 2 years. For the past several years, Greg has coached the Cate School Girls Varsity team. The team has seen much success under his reign, including coming off a season where the team made history by sharing the Condor League Championship for two years in a row, and as a CIF quarter-finalist was invited as one of the 8 Southern California teams to the Division 4 State playoffs. In 2014 with the Rams, Greg led his Girls Varsity to win the Frontier League 13-0 (not dropping a set) and earn a Division 4 CIF championship, along with a quarter-final win in State. He led his 2015 team to another Frontier League championship, and a semi-final finish in CIF.
Greg has over 10 years of club coaching experience, having coached at various age divisions for both Travel and Non-Travel teams, as well as at Club camps and clinics. Greg assisted the ’08 14’s team to earning a 15th place finish in the Open Division of Junior Olympics, as well as the ’09 14-Blue team to taking 2nd at the SCVA JO Club Qualifier, earning a bid and finishing 23rd in the National Division of Junior Olympics! Greg’s 2010 16-Smack team qualified for the Junior Nationals Open Division and placed 19th overall!
Greg works full-time for a medical company, as well as currently coaches the Girls & Boys Varsity at Cate School.
K.C. Collins (VB Instructor)
- Current Girl’s Varsity Assistant Coach at Cate School, with two first place league finishes and 2014 Division 4 CIF Champs
- Former SBVC coach and Club Administrator from 2009-2014
K.C. grew up in Hawaii competing in equestrian events, soccer, tennis and sailing.
She picked up volleyball as an adult at East Beach earning her “AAA” rating in CBVA events in her first year, and played indoor in City League.
K.C. began coaching her career coaching at Santa Barbara High School. She coached and assisted the girls’ teams at all levels at SBHS for over 9 years, coached the freshmen boys team on and off for several seasons, and coached 2 seasons of JV girls with Buena High School. K.C. has also enjoyed assisting the SBCC Women’s team on and off for several years. While assisting at SBCC in 2010, the team tied for first place in the WSC conference, finished in the top 16 in state playoffs with a final 21-6 record and ranked 5th overall in Southern California. K.C. currently works full time at Cate School. She also assists the girls varsity where the 2013 team made history by sharing the Condor League Championship for a second year in a row, and as a CIF semi-finalist was invited as one of the 8 southern California teams to the Division 4 State playoffs. In 2014, she assisted as the team finished as the champion in the Frontier League with a 13-0 record (not dropping a set) along with becoming the Division 4 CIF champion! The 2015 team was once again champion of the Frontier League and a CIF semi-finalist.
K.C. began coaching at SBVC and became the Club Administrator in ’99 until ‘14. While coaching club at SBVC, K.C. led many successful teams to finish in the top of the SCVA, win bids to Nationals, won the SCVA JO Open Qualifier in 2008 with her 14s team, and continued on to place high at Junior Olympics as well.
K.C. has coached at all travel team age divisions, club camps and clinics, and assisted in the development of the Blenders Program. Partnered with previous SBVC Club Director Liz Towne-Gilbert, K.C. created the successful Summer Camps, Madskills and Volley Pints programs. She also spent one season as the Director for the 805 Carpinteria Volleyball Club, where she oversaw all aspects of 5 travel teams and 3 non-travel teams – the largest number of players in CVC history.
K.C. enjoys playing beach volleyball and running around barefoot.
