“Practice does not make perfect. Only perfect practice makes perfect.”
Vince Lombardi

If you’ve ever witnessed a young piano pupil learn a new song, you know how quickly classical Chopin turns into brutal chompin’. Yet, despite what your ears tell you, there’s a lot of activity going on in that young pupil’s brain, and under certain conditions she will either excel and master the piece, or sputter-out and plateau.

In his book, “Talent is Overrated: What Really Separates World-Class Performers from Everybody Else” Fortune’s Senior Editor Geoff Colvin identifies the common key that separates skillful masters like Warren Buffet, Yo-Yo Ma, and Chris Rock from the rest of the pack (Hint: it’s not natural talent). Colvin’s conclusion: deliberate practice.

Becoming a world-class performer

Deliberate practice is a highly structured repeated activity, aimed at improving performance, designed for your current skill level, and paired with immediate feedback. This may seem like any other style of practice, but it is much more nuanced. Deliberate practice requires a diligent pupil and a knowledgeable instructor who can hone in on the appropriate progression. Say you’re working on your hitting approach, an example of deliberate practice would be focusing only on the size of your footsteps on your approach, then after the rep is over, receiving relevant feedback, including if the desired task was completed: yes or no. This sequence would be repeated multiple times before moving on to the next element (It may seem tedious, but it’s very gratifying!). As you can imagine, deliberate practice requires a lot of mental attention, therefore training duration must be limited. As the saying goes: “quality, not quantity!”

Bringing “Deliberate Practice” to you

Deliberate practice does exist during team practice, but not enough for skill mastery, since coaches need to train the team as a system. College volleyball programs identified this shortcoming, and hold small-group skills training outside of team practice. But the time to learn is now!

So today, we’re launching the new PRO Series program at $30 per session.
